Best Day Trips from Óbidos — 6 Unmissable Excursions
Óbidos is perfectly positioned for exploring some of Portugal's most iconic destinations. Here are 6 day trips you shouldn't miss, all easily doable from Óbidos House.
Nazaré — Giant Waves & Fishing Tradition (30 min)
Famous for the world's biggest surfable waves, Nazaré is spectacular year-round. Take the funicular to Sítio for clifftop views, visit the lighthouse at Praia do Norte, explore the colourful old town, and feast on fresh seafood. In winter, watch surfers tackle 20+ metre waves. In summer, enjoy the lively beach atmosphere. Allow a full day to do it justice.
Peniche & Berlengas Islands (35 min)
Portugal's surf capital with its dramatic peninsula coastline. In summer, take the boat to the Berlengas Islands — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with crystal-clear water, sea caves, and a 17th-century island fortress. Book boat tickets in advance. Back in Peniche, walk the harbour, visit the fortress-turned-museum, and eat at one of the harbour-front seafood restaurants.
Alcobaça & Batalha Monasteries (25-40 min)
Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites that can be combined in one day. Alcobaça's Cistercian monastery houses the romantic Gothic tombs of Pedro and Inês — one of Portugal's greatest love stories. The medieval kitchen is remarkable. Batalha's monastery is a Gothic masterpiece with its hauntingly beautiful Unfinished Chapels. Both are deeply impressive and less crowded than Lisbon's Jerónimos.
Sintra — Fairytale Palaces (60 min)
Sintra's colourful Pena Palace, mysterious Quinta da Regaleira with its initiatic well, and the Moorish castle ruins make for an unforgettable day. Leave early to beat the crowds — Sintra is extremely popular. Buy tickets online in advance. The winding mountain roads through misty forest add to the magical atmosphere. Return via the coastal road through Cascais for a scenic drive.
Lisbon (75 min)
Portugal's vibrant capital deserves at least a day. Explore the historic Alfama district, ride the famous Tram 28, visit the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, and eat pastéis de nata at the legendary Pastéis de Belém bakery. The A8 motorway makes the drive easy and direct. Consider taking the train from Caldas da Rainha to avoid city parking.
Tomar — Templar City (60 min)
The atmospheric Convent of Christ in Tomar, another UNESCO site, was the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal. The famous Manueline window is one of Portugal's most iconic architectural details. The charming town below has riverside cafés and a well-preserved historic centre. Less visited than Sintra but equally impressive.
