Best Time to Visit Óbidos, Portugal — A Season Guide
Wondering when to visit Óbidos? This medieval gem on Portugal's Silver Coast offers something special in every season — from the famous Chocolate Festival in spring to the enchanting Christmas Village in winter.
Spring (March–May): Chocolate Festival & Blooming Gardens
Spring is arguably the best time to visit Óbidos. Temperatures climb to a pleasant 15-22°C, wildflowers carpet the surrounding hills, and the crowds haven't arrived yet. The star attraction is the Óbidos International Chocolate Festival, usually held in April or early May. For two weeks, the medieval town fills with chocolate sculptures, tastings, workshops, and a giant chocolate house. Our pool starts warming up in May, and the beaches are gloriously empty.
Summer (June–August): Medieval Fair & Beach Season
Summer brings hot, sunny days (25-30°C) and the famous Óbidos Medieval Fair in July-August. For two weeks, the town transforms into a medieval village with jousting, fire-eaters, and feasts on wooden plates. The Silver Coast beaches are at their best — Foz do Arelho, Baleal, and São Martinho do Porto are all within 15-20 minutes. This is peak season, so book early. Our private pool is perfect for cooling off after a day of exploring.
Autumn (September–November): Wine Routes & Big Waves
Autumn is the locals' secret. September still feels like summer (20-25°C) but without the crowds. October brings the Folio Literary Festival and the start of Nazaré's legendary big wave season. Wine harvest is underway — visit local quintas for tastings. November is quieter and cooler, ideal for hiking in Serra de Aire e Candeeiros and exploring UNESCO sites like Alcobaça and Batalha.
Winter (December–February): Christmas Village & Cozy Escapes
December transforms Óbidos into a magical Christmas Village with ice rinks, Santa's house, and thousands of lights. It's one of Portugal's most beloved Christmas events. January and February are the quietest months (8-15°C) — perfect for couples seeking a romantic getaway. The medieval town is practically yours, restaurants are uncrowded, and prices are at their lowest. Big waves at Nazaré are at their most dramatic.
Our Recommendation
For the best overall experience, visit in late April to early June or September to mid-October. You get warm weather, fewer crowds, lower prices, and the pool is usable. But honestly, every season has its charm — that's what makes Óbidos special.
